  • If the Ottawa guidelines are followed, radiological investigation is unnecessary in 85% of ankle sprains.
  • Bandaging with tape or brace is preferable to plaster cast immobilisation and surgery as treatment.
  • Ankle sprains can be perfectly treated by the GP without expensive investigation and treatment.
  • Medical treatment with oral or topical agents (antiinflammatories – NSAIDs) serves little purpose.
